In a brutal show of intolerant attitude to civil citizens, men of the Lagos State Task Force today assaulted a journalist, Mr Kasali Akinwale of The Source magazine, around Ikeja Along axis of Lagos State.
The operatives who were armed to the teeth were said to have carried out an early morning raid on Okada riders (commercial motorcyclists) around the railway line, popularly known as Ikeja Along, in a commando style and were indiscriminately chasing motorcyclists while passers-by and pedestrians around the area scampered for safety.
In the ensuing melee, a fleeing Okada rider was almost knocked down to death by a bus.
The journalist who witnessed the scene and approached the officers to cautioned the operatives was severely beaten, teargassed, had his clothes torn before been bundled into the waiting Black Maria for daring to intervene.
Narrating his ordeal, the brutalised journalist and a member of the Nigerian Guild of Investigative Journalists (NGIJ) said: “At exactly 8:25am this morning, I alighted at Ajayi Farm and walked down the Lagos Abeokuta expressway, specifically towards Along bus stop.
“The Lagos Task Force had it’s Black Maria and utility vehicles parked on the newly constructed BRT lane on the expressway arresting motorcyclist and impounding their (motor) bikes.
“As the Police tried to arrest a motorcyclist on the highway, the motorcyclist was almost knocked down by an oncoming Commercial Bus, that passers-by were scared that the motorcyclist had been knocked down.
“Luckily for him, he escaped by a whisker.
“On seeing this and the lackadaisical approach of the Police who weren’t remorseful in anyway, I approached one of the Policemen politely, that is as much they are carrying out their duties, they should probably be careful not to have any casualty that might result to death.
“The Police shouted at me that who am I and what’s my business. I identified myself by showing him my Identity Card.
“The next thing was a hit at my back by one of the men. As I turned back to ascertain what was amiss, I had been mobbed by the Police beating me severely, teargassed me, tore my cloth, cut of my bag strapped at my back, rough handled me and threw me inside the Black Maria”, he said.
