HON AFINNI MEETS HIS CONSTITUENT IN ANNUAL STAKEHOLDERS' MEETING.

.Lagos State Government has embarked on Waste Recycling Programme, Hon. Hakeem Fahm.


Member of Lagos State House of Assembly representing Lagos Island Constituency II, hon. Sulaiman Olanrewaju Afinni engaged the people of his constituency in a statewide simultaneous Stakeholders' meeting on the issue of 'Environmental Challenges: Community Engagement To Facilitate Lasting Solution', which held today, 11th of September, 2019 at Christ Church Cathedral Primary School, Broad Street Lagos.

The Lagos Island East Council Chairman, Mayor Kamal Salau Bashua gave the opening speech as he shed more light on the reason for the occasion. The stakeholders' meeting is organized by state house of assembly to get the feedback from the constituencies. He said that despite the fact that Lagos Island is below sea level, the council has been proactive in the area of maintaining clean environment. "Also, the government and the community have to work collectively to create a dirty free environment." , said Kamal.

The Police Area Commander, Mr Bode Ojajuni complained about the abandoned bridges, which has aided security threat to the community. However, he acknowledged the efforts of council chairman, Mayor Kamal Salau Bashua in arresting the hoodlums who are terrorising Lagos island community. He suggested to the state government to focus on the issue of uncompleted buildings and abandoned buildings as hideouts for the criminals.

Mr Ahmed Olaufe suggested to the government to look into the areas of developers who left sands and other building materials in our drainages without evacuation. Government should device an appropriate punishment for them.

CDC chairman faulted the government for not enforcing the laws made to tackle most communal issues. He said another disaster is knocking on the issue of quack developer. Government should look into that as well.

The APC LGA party chairman, Mr Rasheed Shobaloju advised government to adopt the creation of Environmental Sanitation Corps to fight the indiscipline on environmental issues because Health Corps (Wole-wole) are not that effective again. He also advised government to embark on the demolition of illegal structures on the drainages to prevent cases of flood.

Afinni responded that government will now enforce the laws being made. He said in the area if security, he will assist in facilitating the environmental sanitation corps as Hon. Lanre Afinni asked the council chairman to give more insight on the creation of  sanitation corps. In response to the assemblyman, Mayor Kamal Salau Bashua assured the populace that sanitation corps will be launched in two weeks time because all gadgets have been in place. He implored the community members not to come begging for any defaulters when the sanitation corps are in operation..

Some of the audience shared their views as one the community stakeholders advised the government on the adoption of waste recycling programme. The commissioner of Science and Technology, Hakeem Fahm responded that government has embarked on the waste recycling programme since two weeks ago, and it will soon get to various communities very soon.

Afinni, interacting with our correspondents said, "We engage our constituents annually to deliberate on issues affecting our general well-being; to rub minds on issues of concern and the greater Progress of our state, and indeed to educate citizens on government policies and activities as well as taking their complaints and suggestions back to the executive arm of government for necessary action.

"Based on the our past meetings, we have been able to understand some of our social economic and infrastructural challenges in the various constituencies. As a way forward, my good self together with the Lagos State House of Assembly, have decided this time to present and address issues of environmental challenges. This is why the theme for this edition is 'Environmental Challenges: Community Engagement To Facilitate Lasting Solution'.
"However, considering the importance of your input as our constituents, and the fact that Lagos State is the most populous state in Nigeria, with over 22 million people attracting  daily influx of over 6, 000 migrants, the state certainly faces daunting rapid environmental problems, which includes amongst other, waste generation and management. Hence, we have dedicated the 2019 constituency stakeholders' meeting to engage you on the current environmental challenges facing the state. Efforts being put in place to sensitise residents on the need to protect the environment, but some still prefer to violate the environmental law and involve in actions capable of frustrating government's efforts and huge investment in the section."
