ENGAGES ALPHA BETA CONSULTING IN IGR DRIVE
FUNMILAYO AKANDE MUHAMMED SAYS ‘NON-PAYMENT OF TAXES IS UNACCEPTABLE’
In order to be able to serve the residents of Apapa-Iganmu Local Council Development Area better and deliver the dividends of democracy to them in the year 2020, the management team of the local council embarked on a Three-day budget retreat.
This is against the backdrop of the reality that to improve public service delivery, revenue must also improve. And dependence on federal allocation cannot suffice. ‘We have been trying on our own. The revenue last year was not encouraging. But this year, I want to make sure that we realize more,’ said the council boss, Alhaja Mrs. Funmilayo Akande-Muhammed.
The council boss continued: ‘The payment of radio and TV tax is still strange to my people. This is unacceptable. They need to realize that the money we use for development will come from various sources. I will still meet with stakeholders so that they can enlighten the people about this thing. We will also put signboards around so that the people will know they kind of taxes they are supposed to pay.’
‘Our plans for enforcement will be executed quarterly. So our first for this year will be in April. We will provide vehicles for the enforcement team to make the job easy. The loopholes in tax collection, we hope, will be blocked by Alpha-Beta Consulting. I know by the Grace of God that by the end of the year, things will be better,’ concluded Dr. Akande-Muhammed.
On his part, Hon. Wasiu Yusuf, Secretary to Apapa-Iganmu LCDA shared: ‘This is the budget deliberation. Before now, we had a stakeholders meeting on budget to ask people what they want. We are not just a government that does things without talking to them. Their feedback is what makes us know what to do. We believe we will surpass the achievements of last year.’
On the importance of the budget retreat, Folashade Adewale, the HOD, Budget, Planning and Research Statistics in Apapa-Iganmu LCDA stated that budgeting goes through various phases. She shared: ‘We are having our 2020 Budget Retreat. Before we approve budget, there are phases. The first stage is to hold a stakeholders meeting where the needs of the members of the public are discussed. Then we prioritize the ones we can address at the moment. At the budget retreat, we deliberate on what we can do, then we roll the rest to another year.’
Speaking on their plans to increase the revenue base of the council, Oluwatoyin Faseyi, from Alpha Beta Consulting said: ‘We have been engaged to increase revenue base of Apapa-Iganmu LCDA by bringing in technology, expertise and experience of Alpha Beta Consulting. We will build capacity of their staff. We will automate the business processes that will minimize human interference and cash handling, thus increasing the revenue. You can pay online, USSD, POS, while the receipting and billing is also automated.’
It is hoped that the budget retreat will yield favourable outcomes for the entirety of the local council.
